Favored Soul

Rules

The favored soul is able to channel divine power with surprising ease. She is able to perform the same tasks as her fellow divine spellcasters but with virtually no study; to her, it comes naturally. Scholars wonder if favored souls have traces of outsider blood from unions, holy or unholy, centuries ago and generations removed. Others suggest that divine training of the proper type awakens the ability, or that favored souls are simply imbued with their gifts by their gods when they begin the cleric’s path. In any case, favored souls cast their spells naturally, as much through force of personality as through study.

Favored souls are often loners, wandering the land serving their deities. They are welcomed by their churches but treated as unusual and are sometimes misunderstood. They are emissaries of their deities and outside the church’s command structure—respected mystics not requiring the support normally crucial to a priest’s success. This makes them sometimes revered and sometimes envied by their cleric cousins.

A favored soul is often of the same alignment as her deity, though some are one step away. Those who stray further will find their divine connection strained.

Spellcasting Charisma-based (a base charisma score of 10 + the spell's level is required to cast a spell, bonus spells are based on modified charisma, and the charisma modifier affects spell DCs). Divine (spell failure from armor is ignored). Spontaneous (no spell preparation required). They share the Cleric's spell list, but choose a limited selection of spells at level-up as Bard and Sorcerer do.

Divine Weapon

The favored soul begins play proficient with a chosen weapon that represents their connection to their deity. This also determines the weapon that they gain future benefits with. Favored Souls who choose Unarmed Strike as their Divine Weapon receive the Improved Unarmed Strike feat.

Divine Weapon Focus

The favored soul gains the Weapon Focus feat for her Divine Weapon.

Energy Resistance

The favored soul chooses an energy type and gains 5/ resistance against that type, as per the Resist Energy feat. At 10th level and 15th level, the character gains resistance 5/ against another energy type of her choosing.

Divine Weapon Specialization

The favored soul gains the Weapon Specialization feat for her Divine Weapon.

Flight

The favored soul gains the extraordinary ability to fly at will. Some favored souls also manifest wings when this happens, but not all. If a favored soul does manifest wings, and those wings are removed or harmed, it does not impact their ability to fly.

Damage Reduction

The favored soul gains +1/10 damage reduction.
